OGF25 in Catania started with a tutorial on Desktop Grid computing and the EDGeS project. This marked the entrance of Desktop Grid computing in the Open Grid Forum that has a main focus on service Grids, such as EGEE. At the tutorial session it was explained how Desktop Grids can make the vasts amounts of unused computing time of companies and people at home available for scientific applications. By donating computing time, people can help science. The EDGeS project is bridging between Desktop Grids and Grids like EGEE. This allows scientists who are used to work within an EGEE environment to tap into a much larger pool of resources. The tutorial continued with an explanation of the applications already running on the EDGeS infrastructure and information on how to port scientific applications to EDGeS and Desktop Grids.

The current size of the Desktop Grids connected to the EDGeS Bridges is about 80.000 processors - about equal to the EGEE number - and growing fast. Connected Desktop Grids include SZTAKI Desktop Grid, AlmereGrid and a local Desktop Grid at the University of Westminster in London.

The EDGeS Bridge works in two directions: work can be sent from Desktop Grids to EGEE. This was shown in production at OGF25/EGEE in Catania that is held this week in Catania, Italy. The other direction, sending jobs from EGEE to Desktop Grids is currently in test phase, expecting to be in production within two months.

EDGeS provides a production Grid infrastructure and a test/development infrastructure for scientific users.

In addition to the tutorial, EDGeS co-organised a joint user forum session with EGEE on Thursday and presented at the newly formed Production Grid Infrastructure working group of OGF. The user forum session focused around application and usage of Grids and standardisation. By using OGF standards, EDGeS assures it can work together with all types of Grids. There is already a large port folio of applications ported to EDGeS' connected Grids.

At the Forum session IberCivis presented a Spanish public Desktop Grid and AlmereGrid showed that also a town can be turned into a Grid allowing citizens to give science a helping hand.

EDGeS slaat brug tussen grootste Europese grids

 Almere, 30 juni 2008 - Tijdens het eerste EDGeS User en Industry Forum in Orsay, bij Parijs, stelde het EDGeS project zijn plannen voor om een brug te bouwen tussen Desktop Grids gebaseerd op Boinc en XtremWeb middleware, en Service Grids zoals het gLite gebaseerde EGEE. In Orsay stelden academische en industriële organisaties hun toepassingen voor, van het interpreteren van bewakingsbeelden en medische beeldvorming tot simulatie van materialen. Deze topassingen zullen overgedragen worden op de gecombineerde Desktop Grid/Service Grid infrastructuur die EDGeS zal creëren met de EDGeS Applicatation Development Methodology (EADM), een methode om toepassingen gemakkelijk naar het grid over te brengen . AlmereGrid is de Nederlandse partner in EDGeS. Het budget voor EDGeS, een tweejarig project, bedraagt  2,9 miljoen Euro.


Het EDGeS User en Industry Forum wil in Europa de focus worden van Desktop Computing geïntegreerd met Service Grid Computing. Het User Forum concentreert zich op het academisch gebruik van grid computing terwijl het Industry Forum eerder focust op het gridgebruik in bedrijven en op organisaties die hun eigen grid willen opzetten.

Een belangrijk probleem waarmee potentiële gridgebruikers geconfronteerd worden is de moeilijkheid om  toepassingen naar het grid over te brengen. Het EDGeS project pakt dit probleem aan door de leden van het forum een Grid Application Development Methodology aan te bieden. Daarnaast is er een discussieforum over Desktop Grids beschikbaar en een wiki die zal uitgroeien tot een technisch referentie handboek.

Een eigen grid opzetten is niet makkelijk. Het EDGeS project wil ondersteuning bieden voor twee belangrijke types van Desktop Grid middleware: BOINC and XtremWeb. Voor BOINC biedt EDGeS partner MTA SZTAKI een makkelijk te installeren distributie. Voor XtremWeb vormen EDGeS partners IN2P3 en INRIA de belangrijkste ontwikkelaars.

Als deel van het EDGeS project heeft de Westminster Universiteit in Londen een BOINC-gebaseerd Desktop Grid geïnstalleerd op de campus. Momenteel draait het Grid al meer dan 600 computer CPU's. Het Grid werd gebouwd met de SZTAKI Boinc installateurs en zal gebruikt worden als deel van de EDGeS Grid testinfrastructuur.

Er is nog een andere horde die gebruikers moeten nemen. Momenteel dient men een Service Grid te gebruiken zoals het gLite gebaseerde EGEE, of een Desktop Grid. Er bestaat geen mogelijkheid om beide naadloos te integreren op Europese schaal. Het EDGeS project streeft ernaar dit op te lossen door een brug te bouwen die de verbinding van beide Grids toelaat. Op deze wijze kunnen programma's die het meest geschikt zijn voor een Desktop Grid gedraaid worden op een BOINC of XtremWeb gebaseerd Grid. Programma's die beter geschikt zijn voor een Service Grid zoals EGEE kunnen daarop gedraaid worden.

Op deze manier draagt EDGeS bij tot de uitbouw van een onderhoudbare Grid infrastructuur in Europa door bestaande nationale en internationale Service en Desktop Grids te integreren.
