Citizen support for eScience

       - Introduction: European citizens can now support development of sustainable energy
       - The technology behind EDGeS@Home (Peter Kacsuk, MTA SZTAKI, Hungary)
       - How it works: a demo
       - Official  opening.
      

Introduction summary: With EDGeS@Home one  can donate one's unused computing time to science. EDGeS@Home runs applications that are developed for scientific Grids but also run on Voluntary Desktop Grids consisting of computers at home. The first application to which citizens can contribute is a sustainable energy application: ISDEP, a fusion application.


Technology summary: The technology to allow scientists to submit scientific computational work from their regular Grid environments (EGEE) to computers at home through EDGeS@Home has been developed in the framework of the European project EDGeS.

Demo summary: A demonstration will  show how a scientific computational job goes from the scientist through the  EDGeS infrastructure to a computer at home. It will also show what needs to be done  by someone at home to participate in helping this sustainable energy research  project.

14.30  New developments in AlmereGrid - Introducing the new Erasmus application (Luc de Zeeuw, Erasmus Computing Grid)
      
Summary: ErasmusMC has a large genome sequencing project that requires massive computer power. This application has been ported to AlmereGrid and after thorough testing is now available for people at home to donate their computer time to. (Tobias Knoch, Luc V. de Zeeuw, Erasmus Computing Grid)

15.30  Dutch Desktop Grids for Science - I: Leiden Classical (Mark Somers, University of Leiden)
Summary: Leiden Classical allows to donate computing time to classical dynamics, a branch of physics we all learned at school. Leiden Classical is firmly integrated in the scientific computer infrastructure of the university and is working on an exiting new application.

16.00    Dutch Desktop Grids for Science - II: ABC@Home (Bart de  Smit, ABC@Home)

Summary: ABC@Home allows to donate computing time to research into a mathematical problem. There is a supporting website (in Dutch) http://www.rekenmeemetabc.nl/ aimed at children, with background information and exploration possibilities.

16.30  Closing keynote -   Federating Grids and Clouds with DGSI (Bernhard Schott, Platform Computing)

With the new wave technolgies called Clouds, the question is what to do with proven technologies like Grids. Federation is one answer. DGSI is one approach that is now implemented in a large German project
